Using Breakout Rooms in Teams

Using Breakout Rooms in Teams

Overview

Breakout rooms is a feature in Microsoft Teams that allows for organizers to divide the meeting into sub-groups for discussion and brainstorming sessions.

Breakout rooms was released 12/9/20. It may be several days before the feature is available for all users.

Considerations

  • Only the meeting organizer can start breakout rooms.

  • The “new meeting experience” must be enabled in Teams. See “Turning on the New Meeting Experience in Teams” here.

  • Guests (those without a CSU Microsoft 365 account) are unable to join breakout rooms in the Teams desktop app and would need to use Teams through a web browser.
