Connecting to Resources (Off Campus and/or Secured Resources)

Overview

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is required in scenarios where 1) users need to connect from off campus to resources that are typically only available when connected to the campus network or 2) connecting to select secured campus resources (Oracle HR, Banner, including ARIESweb) whether they are on or off campus.

Most Windows laptops in the college are configured with DirectAccess. However, users may need to use GlobalProtect to connect to select, secured campus resources. In those scenarios, the user can leave DirectAccess configured and connect to GlobalProtect as needed when using those resources. Both solutions provide a secure connection for accessing campus resources remotely.

DirectAccess

Windows laptops managed by the College are configured by default with DirectAccess, Microsoft’s VPN solution, and allows access to on-campus resources when off campus. DirectAccess automatically connects after the user logs into the computer.

DirectAccess works for the majority of campus resources, however Oracle HR, Banner (including ARIESweb), and several of the CSU Libraries' resources require using the university’s VPN solution, GlobalProtect.

How to tell if DirectAccess is Connected

DirectAccess will only connect when the user is off campus. One can tell if DirectAccess is connected by clicking on the wireless network connections icon in the system tray at the bottom right of the screen and looking for the “CHHS Connection”. It will display as “Connected” when off campus.

GlobalProtect

CSU also provides secure off-campus access to on-campus resources via the GlobalProtect gateway. Citrix, Oracle HR, Banner (including ARIESweb), and several of the CSU Libraries' resources require using the university’s VPN solution, GlobalProtect.

DUO Required for GlobalProtect

Using and connecting to Global Protect requires the use of DUO, the university’s solution for two factor authentication. More information about DUO can be found here: https://it.colostate.edu/duo-two-factor-authentication/
