Sites

The CHHS WordPress environment uses the “Multisite” feature that allows multiple virtual sites to share a single WordPress installation. Each /site is in essence a subsite of the main www.chhs.colostate.edu website.

In DNS we still have custom domains for each unit and many of the center, institutes, labs, and other special units. More on that in the DNS section under WPEngine Hosting.

This view shows the current list of active websites. You see the total number of sites and the number of Public sites. Any site that is not “public” is password protected. Read more about password protected websites.

The list shows the site URL, last updated date, registered date, and number of users.

Add Site

  1. My Sites > Network Admin > Sites > Add New

    1. Enter site URL: FSHN, CM, DM, etc.

    2. Enter site title: Unit name

    3. Admin email: jennifer.garvey@colostate.edu

    4. Click "Add Site"

  2. My Sites > hover over new site > Dashboard

    1. Appearance > Customize > Site Identity

      1. delete tagline

      2. add site icon 

      3. click "publish"

      4. click < arrow

      5. click X

    2. On the top of the page click "Redirection setup" link to active plugin

      1. Click "Start Setup"

      2. Click "Confirm Setup"

      3. Click "Finish Setup"

      4. Click "Finished"

    3. Pages > All pages > Add New > Enter page title

      1. Page Attributes: parent (no parent) template (03-Academic Unit or 02- Flexible Landing Page)

      2. Click "publish"

      3. Quirky issue in the CMS - you will need to delete this first page that you create and add another home page (it's annoying).

  3. Appearance > customize > homepage settings > select "a static page" radio button > select "Home"

    1. click "publish"

    2. click X

  4. Pages > delete Sample Page

  5. If special center, lab, or institute site go to Appearance > Site Header

    1. Select "Custom Title and Link" 

    2. Select the homepage and enter the link text you want to appear in the site header

  6. If special center, lab, or institute site go to Appearance > Footer Content

    1. Fill in the fields with the appropriate contact information

  7. Make the pages "Private" until you are ready to launch!

  8. Plugins > WP Media folder > Activate > skip wizard

  9. Appearance > Menus 

    1. "create a new menu" > "Follow CHHS" > check "footer social links" box > check "inherit from main site" box > click "save menu"

    2. "create a new menu" > "Header Utility Menu" > check "Header Utility Menu" box > check "inherit from main site" box > click "save menu"

    3. "create a new menu" > "Info For" > check "footer links" box > check "inherit from main site" box > click "save menu"

    4. "create a new menu" > "Main Menu" > check "inherit from main site" box > click "save menu"

    5. "create a new menu" > "Quicklinks" > check "footer links col2" box > check "inherit from main site" box > click "save menu"

  10. While the site is in development mode, you will want to check the "Discourage search engines from indexing this site" checkbox located under Settings > Reading.  Be sure to uncheck this after launch!

  11. Enter Gravity Forms license key

  12. Enter reCAPTCHA site and secret keys Forms > Settings

  13. Set up WP Mail SMTP options under Settings > WP Mail SMTP 

    1. From Email:  chhs_webmaster@colostate.edu

    2. Check "Force From Email"

    3. From Name: College of Health and Human Sciences

    4. Force From Name checkbox: leave unchecked

    5. Mailer "Other SMTP"

    6. Check "Set the return-path to match the From Email"

    7. SMTP Host: smtp.office365.com

    8. Select TLS

    9. SMTP Username: chhs_webmaster@colostate.edu

    10. SMTP Password: (see password safe)

  14. Set up Google Analytics

    1. Settings > Google Analytics

    2. Check "User Google Tag Manager instead" checkbox

    3. Enter GTM-KN96MT9 in the "Google Tag Manager ID" field

  15. Use Yoast plugin to index site.  Go to site dashboard, then click "Start processing and speed up your site now" button to have Yoast index your site.

  16. Pull up sitemap.xml file in your browser  https://www.chhs.colostate.edu/enter-name-of-subsite-here/sitemap.xml

  17. Download the https://www.chhs.colostate.edu/robots.txt file and add the new sitemap.xml file (from step 21), save and send to Jesse - NewCity to upload to the root of our website.
